Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Satyridae.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Satyridae, family name (1835 or earlier) < Satyrus , genus name ( P. A. Latreille & J. B. Godart Encyclopédie méthodique (insectes) (1819) IX. 11; compare satyr n. 5) + -idae (see -id suffix3).
Entomology.

Any butterfly of the large and cosmopolitan nymphalid subfamily Satyrinae (originally the family Satyridae), the members of which typically have brown wings with eyespots, and caterpillars which feed mainly on grasses.These butterflies are also called satyrines.
