Etymology: < ecclesiastical Latin Sarabaīta (Cassianus, 4–5th cent., who says that the word is Egyptian; but no light has been thrown on it from that language). Sarabite is the form commonly found in English translations of the Rule of St. Benedict.

Church History.

One of a class of monks in the early Church who lived together in small bands without rule or superior. †Also as adj., applied to certain followers of the Franciscan rule (see quot.138.), probably the Fratricelli.
