Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: bio- comb. form, stratigraphy n.
Etymology: < bio- comb. form + stratigraphy n., after French biostratigraphie (L. Dollo 1904, in Mém. de la Soc. Belge de Géol. 18 213). Compare German Biostratigraphie (1907 or earlier).
Geology.
A branch of stratigraphy that uses the presence of fossils in the dating and ordering of sequences of rock. Also: the biostratigraphic characteristics of a rock or type of fossil.
