Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Norwegian. Or (ii) a borrowing from Swedish. Etymons: Norwegian sats; Swedish sats.
Etymology: < (i) Norwegian sats jump, leap (1892 or earlier; 1896 or earlier in the specific skiing sense), or its etymon (ii) Swedish sats jump, leap (18th cent.) < German Satz leap (see ansatz n.).
Skiing.
The action made by a skier in preparation for a jump, in which the skier crouches down then straightens up and swings forward while applying downward pressure, so as to ensure upward and forward movement into the jump.

The ‘sats’ is a downward pressure of the ski on the snow made by rising on the toes, and nearly straightening the knee and thigh joints, the arms at the same time being thrown upwards.
