a. A province ruled over by a satrap (satrap n. 1a) in the ancient Persian empire. historical.Darius I (King of Persia 521–486 b.c.) divided his empire into 20 satrapies, thus establishing this system. It was continued by subsequent rulers including Alexander the Great (356–323 b.c.) and the Parthians (247 b.c. a.d.), but was altered after 224 a.d. by the Sassanians.
