Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese sabi.
Etymology: < Japanese sabi state of appearing old and withered, state of having tranquil elegance (both 18th cent.; already in 1698 with reference to haiku poetry; 10th cent. in sense ‘rust, verdigris, patina’), nominalized stem of sabiru to feel lonely (8th cent.), to rust, corrode, to fall into ruin (11th cent.), to develop a refined taste as a result of being mature and experienced, to possess tranquillity (12th cent.). Compare wabi n.Compare also the following earlier and apparently isolated passages, showing a separate borrowing of the same Japanese word in a different and more literal sense:1889 M. B. Huish Japan & its Art xi. 150 For high relief sabi (a mixture of burnt clay and lac varnish) is used.1904 N. G. Munro Coins of Japan p. xi When one [sc. a coin] has been long buried in lime soil, it acquires a Sabi of green mixed with creamy filling, often crystalline.
An aesthetic or world view characterized by finding beauty or serenity in imperfection and impermanence, for example in an object that has acquired a patina with age and use, or which has been broken and repaired. Also: a style or quality reflecting this aesthetic. Cf. wabi n., wabi-sabi n.Originally and chiefly in Japanese contexts. The concept is rooted in Zen Buddhist teachings.
