Etymology: < Persian ṣafawī, literally ‘relating to Ṣafī al Dīn’ (see Sophy n.1) + -id suffix3. With use as noun compare French Safavide (1866 or earlier), German Safawide (1862 or earlier). Compare earlier Safavi adj. and Safavi n. Compare also earlier Sophy n.1
