Etymology: < Spanish saeta (1884 or earlier in this sense), extended use of saeta arrow (c1200; < classical Latin sagitta : see sagitta n.), apparently conceived as a spontaneous outburst of religious feeling; with the semantic development compare arrow prayer n. at arrow n. Compounds 2.Not fully naturalized in English.
Esp. in southern Spain: an unaccompanied Andalusian folk song, sung during religious processions.
