单词 sae
释义

saen.

Brit. /seɪ/, U.S. /seɪ/, Scottish English /se/
Forms: early Old English Middle English saa, Middle English sa, Middle English saae, Middle English sae, Middle English sau, Middle English–1600s say, 1500s se, 1500s sea, 1500s–1600s sey, 1600s see, 1700s seay; Scottish pre-1700 sa, pre-1700 saa, pre-1700 saay, pre-1700 seye, pre-1700 1700s sea, pre-1700 1700s (1900s– Caithness) saye, pre-1700 1800s– sae, pre-1700 1800s– sey, pre-1700 1900s (Orkney)– say, 1700s sye, 1700s–1800s cea, 1900s– cei (Caithness).
Origin: Probably a word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Probably cognate with North Frisian (mainland) such and Old Icelandic sár (see below); in later use reinforced by or reborrowed < early Scandinavian (compare Old Icelandic sár , Norwegian , Old Swedish sār (Swedish ), Old Danish saa (Danish ), all denoting a kind of tub) < the same Indo-European base as Lithuanian saikas measure, apparently < the same Indo-European base as Lithuanian siekti to reach out for, to strive for, and perhaps also ancient Greek ἵκειν to reach, although the semantic connection is unclear. Compare soe n.The date and context of quot. eOE make it unlikely that the Old English use shows a Scandinavian borrowing. However, the regional distribution of sae n. and its variant soe n. from Middle English onwards suggests significant Scandinavian influence in later use, and the possibility cannot be ruled out that all Middle English (and later) use shows a borrowing from early Scandinavian rather than continuity with the Old English word. The apparent loss of final h in the attested early Old English form of the word (saa , representing from earlier *sāha ; compare roe n.1) suggests that, unlike the Scandinavian cognate (a strong masculine), it may have inflected as a weak (masculine) noun.
Scottish and English regional (chiefly northern) in later use. Now rare.
A wooden tub; esp. one with two ears through which a pole can be passed as a handle. In quot. eOE used to render libitorium, probably an error for post-classical Latin libatorium vessel for pouring libations (Vulgate). Sc. National Dict. (at cited word) records the word as still in use in the Northern Isles and Caithness in 1969.
