Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French rôti.
Etymology: As adjective < French rôti (adjective) roasted (13th cent. or earlier in Anglo-Norman as rosti , with reference to bread), past participle of rôtir roast v. As noun < French rôti (noun) course of roasted meat (1671, earlier in sense ‘piece of roasted meat’ (c1393 in Middle French as rosti)), use as noun of past participle of rôtir; compare rôtie slice of toasted bread (first half of the 13th cent. in Old French as rostie).
