Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin acrotomus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin acrotomus hewn (5th cent.; < Hellenistic Greek ἀκρότομος having the top cut off < ancient Greek ἀκρο- acro- comb. form + -τομος : see -tomy comb. form) + -ous suffix. Compare earlier axotomous adj., paratomous adj.1, peritomous adj.
Mineralogy. rare.
Of a mineral: having a basal cleavage, i.e. one parallel with the basal plane.
