Illiger Prodromus systematis mammalium et avium (1811) 141) < ancient Greek ῥυτίς wrinkle (see rhytidome n.) + scientific Latin -ina -ine suffix¹.The scientific Latin form Rhytina (A. A. Berthold 1827, in tr. P. A. Latreille Nat. Familien des Thierreich 62) is now regarded as an unjustified emendation.

Chiefly Zoology. Now rare.
