Etymology: < Danish rype and its etymon Norwegian rype (also (Nynorsk) rjupe ), cognate with Old Icelandic rjúpa , Swedish ripa , (regional) rypa , rupa , rjåppa ; further etymology uncertain: perhaps < the same Indo-European base as Latvian rubenis black grouse. Compare ripa n.¹ N.E.D. (1910) gives the pronunciation as (rǖ·pə) /ˈryːpə/. In plural form ryper after the Norwegian plural form.

Now rare.

In Scandinavia: the willow grouse, Lagopus lagopus, or the rock ptarmigan, L. muta; = ripa n.¹
