Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese ryōtei.
Etymology: < Japanese ryōtei traditional high-class Japanese restaurant (1897) < ryō food, cuisine (shortened < ryōri; < Middle Chinese) + tei pavilion, elegant residence built in the style of a traditional summer house, often used as the final element in restaurant names ( < Middle Chinese).
In Japan: a traditional restaurant, esp. a prestigious one. Frequently attributive.
