Etymology: < rye n.1 + land n.1Widely attested as a minor place name (especially as a field name), as e.g. Ryeland (1290, Leicestershire), Ruylonde (1329, Derbyshire, now Ryelands Cottages). Such use is probably reflected by the following surname:1327 in G. Kristensson Stud. Middle Eng. Topogr. Terms (1970) 85 Will. (Rob.) del Ruylondes.
Land, usually of a light or inferior quality, suitable for the cultivation of rye or where rye is cultivated; an expanse of such land.
