Origin: Probably either (i) a borrowing from German. Or (ii) a borrowing from Yiddish. Etymons: German Reibach; Yiddish reybakh, revekh.
Etymology: Probably < German (originally Rotwelsch: see Rotwelsch n.) Reibach profit, especially excessive profit (19th cent.; also †Rebbach ) or its etymon Western Yiddish reybakh, rebakh, variant of Yiddish revekh profit < post-biblical Hebrew rewaḥ gain, profit, extended use of biblical Hebrew rewaḥ space, interval (Genesis 32:17) < rāwaḥ to be wide, to be spacious. Compare slightly later ryebuck adj., ryebuck int.
