Origin: Probably a borrowing from French. Etymon: French roti.
Etymology: Probably < Middle French roti rôti n.1 (in roti bouilly ioyeulx , literally ‘jolly boiled roast’, the title of an early 15th-cent. French dance song which originated in Brabant and may have mocked the English for their supposed fondness for roast beef), although in quot. a1529 probably also influenced by rutter n.1 1b and rutterkin n., both of which are first attested in Skelton. See further N. C. Carpenter in Review Eng. Studies (1955) 6 279–84.
Obsolete. rare.
