Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin acrotismus.
Etymology: < scientific Latin acrotismus ( J. M. Good Physiol. Syst. Nosol. (1817) 335) < ancient Greek ἀ- a- prefix6 + κρότος sound of striking (see crotalum n.) + classical Latin -ismus -ism suffix. Compare later anacrotism n., dicrotism n., etc. N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (æ·krŏtiz'm) /ˈækrətɪz(ə)m/.
Medicine. Obsolete.
Absence of arterial pulsation; pulselessness.
