Etymology: < German Rutil (attributed to A. G. Werner by A. W. Lampadius Sammlung practisch-chemischer Abhandlungen (1800) 246) < classical Latin rutilus red (see rutilous adj.), with reference to the colour of the mineral. Compare French rutile (1803 as †ruthile).

Mineralogy.

A typically black or reddish-brown mineral consisting of titanium dioxide, occurring as needle-like crystals.Chemical formula: TiO₂. Crystal system: tetragonal. The colour is mainly due to iron impurities; synthetic rutile is usually colourless.
