Origin: A borrowing from Rusyn; partly modelled on a German lexical item, and partly modelled on a Russian lexical item. Etymon: Rusyn rusyn.
Etymology: Ultimately < Rusyn rusyn (noun), self-designation of the people in the Transcarpathian region < the Rusyn reflex of Old Russian Rus′ (see Russ adj. and n.) + -yn , suffix forming nouns (compare Mordvin n., Ossetin n.). In α. forms after German Russine, (rare) †Rusine, noun (1812 or earlier). In β. forms originally after Russian rusin (1788 or earlier); compare Polish rusin , Slovak Rusín . Compare earlier Ruthene n., Rusnak n. With the use as adjective compare Rusyn rusyn′skyj.
