Etymology: < scientific Latin Russula, genus name ( C. H. Persoon Observationes mycologicæ (1796) i. 100) < classical Latin russus red, red-haired (see rouse adj.) + -ula -ula suffix; compare scientific Latin russulus reddish, slightly red (1769 or earlier). The genus is so called on account of the reddish colour of the cap of many of the species in this genus.

Any of the mycorrhizal fungi constituting the large genus Russula (family Russulaceae); the (often edible) fleshy fruiting body of such a fungus, typically having a brightly coloured (often red) cap, brittle gills, and no veil. Also (in form Russula): the genus itself.
