1. Of, relating to, or designating the North American territories which were colonies of the Russian Empire, esp. during the 19th cent. In later use chiefly in Russo-American Company. Now historical and rare.The first Russian colony was established in Alaska in 1784; from 1799 until the purchase of Alaska by the United States in 1867, Russian territories in North America were administered by the Russo-American Company, which itself ceased all commercial activity in 1881.
