Etymology: < Old French sacriste (= Italian sacrista ), < Latin sacrista , < sacer sacred (sacra neuter plural sacred objects) + -ista : see -ist suffix.
1. An official charged with the custody of the sacred vessels, relics, vestments, etc., of a religious house or a church.In English cathedrals the ‘sacrist’ (sometimes called ‘sacristan’) is always in orders, often a minor canon.
