Etymology: < medieval Latin saladīnus (in decimae saladinae), < Saladin, the name of the Sultan of Egypt and Syria (1137–93).Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈSaladine.
Historical.
Saladine tax n. (also absol.); a tax, consisting of the tenth of a man's income, first imposed in 1188 on England and France for the support of the crusade against Saladin (see above). Modern writers substitute the proper name used attributively or possessively. Saladin tithe n. = Saladine tax n.
