Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: big adj., dipper n.
Etymology: < big adj. + dipper n., in sense 1 from the similarity of its shape to the utensil (compare dipper n. 5a).
1. North American. Astronomy. The name of a distinctive formation of seven bright stars in the constellation Ursa Major. Cf. earlier dipper n. 5b.In Britain this formation of stars is now usually called the Plough.
