Etymology: < classical Latin rūpicapra mountain goat, chamois < rūpi- , combining form of rūpēs steep rocky cliff, crag ( < the stem of rumpere to break: see rumpent n.) + capra she-goat (see capriole n.).Compare scientific Latin rupicapra, specific name (in Capra rupicapra, Linnaeus Systema naturæ (ed. 10, 1758) I. 68), Rupicapra, genus name ( F. A. P. de Garsault Les figures des plantes et animaux (1764) Pl. 704, but not a valid publication for taxonomic purposes).
