Etymology: Probably originally a specific use of rud n.¹ Compare Middle High German rōte kind of reddish or red-finned fish, roach (German †Rote ; < rot red adj.); also (with diminutive suffix) Middle High German rœtelīn (early modern German rötlein ) and (especially with quot. 1685) Middle High German rœtel (German †Rötel).The β. forms (which are apparently restricted to the variety of English spoken in Norfolk) are difficult to explain phonologically.

A Eurasian freshwater cyprinid fish with reddish fins, Scardinius erythrophthalmus, which is very similar to the roach ( Rutilus rutilus) but has a yellowish-green body and yellow eyes. In later use also (usually with distinguishing word): any of several related varieties or species of Scardinius, chiefly native to southern Europe.

Etymology: Probably < the name of Margaret Caroline Rudd (c1745–1798), a famous Anglo-Irish courtesan, for whom the table may have been designed.Compare:1789 A. Hepplewhite Cabinet-Maker & Upholsterer's Guide 14 It derives its name from a once popular character, for whom it is reported it was first invented. The identity of this character is uncertain, but is likely to have been M. C. Rudd. There was also apparently an 18th cent. London cabinetmaker of that surname, but little is known about him, and his name does not appear to have been associated with this kind of table.
