Origin: A borrowing from Latin; modelled on a Spanish lexical item. Etymon: Latin rūctāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin rūctāre to belch (frequentative formation < -rūgere , attested only in ērūgere to disgorge (food or drink) noisily; < the same Indo-European base as ancient Greek ἐρεύγεσθαι , Old English rocettan , Armenian orcam , Russian rygat′ , Polish rzygać , Bulgarian rigam , all in sense ‘to belch’, Lithuanian raugėti to belch, rūgti to ferment, to become sour, all representing various derivative formations); in quot. 1620 after Spanish erutar eruct v. Compare earlier ructing n. Compare also earlier ruck v.3 and ructuation n.
