Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the first syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. rubrospinal Brit. /ˌruːbrə(ʊ)ˈspʌɪnl/, U.S. /ˌrubroʊˈspaɪn(ə)l/.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin rubro-.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin rubro- (in e.g. rubrocroceus reddish yellow (1685 or earlier)), combining form of classical Latin ruber red (ultimately < the same Indo-European base as red adj.); compare -o- connective. With rubrospinal compare French rubro-spinal (1900 or earlier in a medical context). In rubroreticular probably after scientific Latin rubroreticularis (1910 or earlier in a German medical context). Compare rubral adj.Found from the beginning of the 20th cent. in a small number of scientific terms, both new formations and adaptations of foreign words. Combining with second elements of Latin origin.
Anatomy.
Forming adjectives designating nerve fibres and tracts that connect the red nucleus of the brain (nucleus ruber) with another structure, esp. in rubroreticular, rubrospinal.
