Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French rubifier; Latin rubefacere.
Etymology: < Middle French rubifier (French rubéfier , †rubefier , 1611 in Cotgrave) to redden (1413), to alter (a sediment) by rubefaction (1886 or earlier) and its etymon classical Latin rubefacere < rubeus red (see rubeola n.) + -facere (see -fy suffix). Compare Spanish rubificar (first half of the 15th cent.), Italian †rubificare (15th cent.), both in sense ‘to redden’, post-classical Latin rubificare to redden (from 12th cent. in British sources), (in alchemy) to turn to gold (from a1200 in British sources).
1. transitive. Alchemy. To transform (a metal, elixir, etc.) into a state of redness or (esp.) a state of greater purity or potency. Formerly also †intransitive. Cf. red adj. 3a. Now historical.
