Etymology: In α. forms < French rubacelle (1644 or earlier) < rubace (1644 or earlier; < rubis ruby n.1 + -ace , suffix forming nouns with pejorative connotation) + -elle -el suffix2. In β. forms < French rubicelle (1644 or earlier) < rubis ruby n.1 + -elle -el suffix2.
Mineralogy.
A variety of spinel of a yellow or orange-red colour; (with plural) a stone of this variety.
