Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Latin rubellus , -an suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin rubellus reddish (see rubella n.) + -an suffix, after German Rubellan ( A. Breithaupt Vollständige Charakteristik des Mineral-Syst. (ed. 2, 1823) 30).
Mineralogy. Now rare.
A reddish mineral now regarded as a variety of biotite.
