Compare post-classical Latin rubboura (1463 in a Scottish source).It has been suggested that this word is ultimately < Spanish arroba measure of dry goods equivalent to a quarter of a quintal (c1200; also c1250 with reference to liquids; 1065 as arrobo : see arroba n. and compare rove n.⁴), although this presents serious phonological and semantic difficulties.
