Origin: Apparently formed within English, by derivation. Etymon: rub v.1
Etymology: Apparently ultimately < rub v.1, with unexplained ending; perhaps compare -er suffix1, and perhaps also names for other diseases of livestock in -ers , as e.g. dartars n., (the) glanders at glander n. 2a. Compare slightly later rub n.1 7.
British regional. Now historical.
Usually with the. A disease of sheep characterized by incessant rubbing against hard objects, other sheep, etc.; esp. scab or scrapie. Cf. rub n.1 7.
