Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: rule n.1, bounded adj.1, -ness suffix.
Etymology: < rule n.1 + bounded adj.1 + -ness suffix, apparently after German Regelgebundenheit, lit. ‘the quality or fact of being rule-bound’ (a1920 in the works of M. Weber), and Regelhaftigkeit , lit. ‘the quality or fact of following a rule’ (a1920 in the passage translated in quot. 1954). Compare earlier boundedness n.
