Compare post-classical Latin rubantum (1345 in a British source), rubanum (1349, 1369, 1390 in British sources), Old Occitan ruban (14th cent.). Compare earlier riband n. and later ribbon n.It is unclear whether the following shows a variant of the Middle English or the Anglo-Norman word:1406 in Archaeologia (1915) 67 181 Et ij coopertoria..garnita cum rubant et freng serici.

Chiefly Scottish in early use. Now rare.
