Etymology: Imitative of the sound of a drum being beaten. Compare rub-a-dub-dub n.With use in the context of scrubbing laundry clean in quot. 1985 at sense 1 compare rub-a-dub v.2, rub-a-dub-dub n., and notes at those entries.
