Origin: From a proper name. Etymons: proper name Rühmkorff, Ruhmkorff.
Etymology: < the name of Heinrich Daniel Rühmkorff (1803–77; also spelt Ruhmkorff), German-born inventor, who invented the induction coil. With Ruhmkorff coil n. compare French bobine de Ruhmkorff (1855 or earlier).Rühmkorff moved to England after his apprenticeship, and subsequently to France. He began to spell his name without the umlaut diacritic while living abroad.
