单词 rugian
释义

Rugiann.adj.

Brit. /ˈruːdʒɪən/, U.S. /ˈrudʒiən/
Forms: 1500s Rvgian, 1500s– Rugian.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Rugianus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Rugianus (1537 in the passage translated in quot. 1550) < classical Latin Rugiī (plural), the name of a tribe originally inhabiting the southern coast of the Baltic Sea ( < a continental Germanic word (compare the later Germanic reflexes cited below), perhaps < the same base as rye n.1, perhaps with reference to the use of rye as a staple food by the members of the tribe) + -ānus -an suffix. Compare Middle French, French Rugien (1576 (in the passage translated in quot. 1594) or earlier).Compare the following earlier occurrence of the Latin word in an English context:1550 W. Lynne tr. J. Carion Thre Bks. Cronicles iii. f. cx The Gotthi, Vandali, Rugiani and Hunni be not estimed to be one people.Compare Old English Rugum (dative plural), Holmrygum (dative plural), both in sense ‘Rugians’ (the latter apparently reflecting a Germanic compound with first element the base of holm n.1 (compare post-classical Latin Ulmerugi , plural (6th cent. in Jordanes)):OE Widsith 21 Casere weold Creacum ond Cælic Finnum, Hagena holm rycum [read Holmrygum] ond Henden [read Heoden] Glommum.OE Widsith 69 Mid Rugum ic wæs ond mid Glommum ond mid Rumwalum. The correspondence of the Old English words with Old Icelandic Rygir (plural), Hólm-Rygir (plural), both denoting the inhabitants of Rogaland in south-western Norway, is remarkable (the first element of Rogaland apparently shows a genitive plural form of Rygir ), and it is possible that this district may have been the original home of the Rugians. Compare also Old English Rugine Rugians < post-classical Latin Rugini , plural (731 in Bede; < classical Latin Rugiī (see above) + -īnī , plural of -īnus -ine suffix1).
