(the name of) a British learned society for the pursuit and advancement of the natural sciences.The germ of the Society was a discussion held on 28 November 1660 after a lecture at Gresham College, London, by Sir Christopher Wren, when it was agreed to set up ‘a College for the promoting of Physico-Mathematical Experimental Learning’. The Society received its first royal charter from Charles II in 1662 as ‘The Royal Society’ (Latin Regalis Societas); a second charter in 1663 referred to it under the name ‘The Royal Society of London for promoting Natural Knowledge’ (Latin Regalis Societas Londini pro Scientia naturali promovenda), now rendered in its legal title as The Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge.
