Etymology: < acro- comb. form + -some comb. form, after German Akrosoma ( M. V. Lenhossék 1898 , in Archiv. für Mikroscopische Anatomie und Entwicklungsgeschichte 51 282; now Akrosom).
Cell Biology.
A membrane-bound, darkly staining, granular structure surrounding the anterior end of the nucleus in a spermatozoon, containing enzymes that assist in the penetration of the ovum.
