Origin: Perhaps formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: an element of unknown origin, -y suffix1.
Etymology: Probably < a first element of unknown origin + -y suffix1. Compare later rowety adj., rowet n. (although these show a very different geographical distribution), and roughet n. Compare earlier row adj., which in the 16th cent. is still attested outside the southern counties.
English regional (northern) in later use. Now rare.
Of grass, hay, etc.: coarse, rough; overgrown, rank.
