单词 rumpelstiltskin
释义

Rumpelstiltskinn.

Brit. /ˌrʌmplˈstɪltskɪn/, U.S. /ˌrəmplˈstɪl(t)skᵻn/
Forms: 1800s– Rumplestiltskin, 1900s– Rumpelstiltskin, 1900s– Rumplestiltsken, 2000s– Rumplestilzkin.
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Rumpelstilzchen.
Etymology: < German Rumpelstilzchen, the name of a mythical dwarf in a fairy tale ( J. Grimm & W. Grimm Kinder- und Hausmärchen I. (1812) 253: see note below), with suffix substitution (compare -kin suffix). The name of the dwarf in the folk tale recorded by the brothers Grimm is first attested in a letter from Jacob Grimm to Eike von Savigny in April 1808, and again in a manuscript version of the Grimms' Fairy Tales in 1810, in both cases as Rumpenstünzchen . This is apparently a compound consisting of two elements of unknown origin, with the second element apparently formed with the diminutive suffix -chen -kin suffix. The folk tale was first recorded by Wilhelm Grimm from an unnamed informant in Hesse in 1808. In the published (1812) edition of the Fairy Tales, the 1808 version of the story was replaced by a conflation of two other oral versions, one of which was recorded in Kassel (Hesse) in 1811. Although it is possible that one or both of these later oral versions used the form Rumpelstilzchen of the dwarf's name, it is more likely that the Grimms altered the original form of the name on the grounds of a supposed etymological connection with early modern German rumpele stilt (1582), the name of a game in J. Fischart Geschichtsklitterung, an expanded translation of Rabelais's Gargantua (Rabelais's Middle French original does not have a corresponding name of a game). Although the context in Fischart is insufficient to permit any secure conclusions either about the precise nature of the game or about the etymology of its name, rumpele stilt is usually taken (probably already by the Grimms) to denote a game in which a person moves about like a goblin or poltergeist, and originally to have been the name of such a creature. Its precise origin is uncertain, but it may be < rumpeln rumble v.2 + †Stülz person who limps, club-footed person (15th cent., apparently with vowel rounding; compare †Stülzer (15th cent.), †Stilzer (16th cent.), in same sense; probably related to Stelze stilt n.), on the grounds that the goblin is so called on account of his noisy nocturnal ramblings.
allusively. A person or thing likened in some way to Rumpelstiltskin. In German folklore, Rumpelstiltskin was an ill-tempered and vindictive dwarf, who spun straw into gold for a girl imprisoned by the king. The king married the girl, and Rumpelstiltskin claimed her firstborn child as his reward, but agreed to cancel his claim if she could guess his name.
