Etymology: Perhaps an alteration of running n. (compare running n. 22a), influenced by the stem vowel of Middle English (south-west midland) urn running or of its apparent antecedent Old English -yrn (only attested in compounds: see rune n.¹).The stem vowel appears to show the west midland reflex of a rounded vowel (Old English y ), lengthened before the homorganic consonant group rn . While metathesized variants of running n. showing the consonant group are attested in Old English (compare Northumbrian iorning ), it is uncertain whether either running n. or its etymon the present stem of run v. ever show the required rounded vowel in Old English (late West Saxon yrnan , variant of run v., would normally show an unrounded vowel: compare discussion at run v.).
