Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Ruellia.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Ruellia ( C. Plumier Nova plantarum Americanarum genera (1703) 12) < the name of Jean Ruel , French botanist (1479–1539) + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix2.
Any of numerous flowering plants comprising the genus Ruellia (family Acanthaceae), chiefly native to tropical regions of Asia and the Americas but commonly cultivated elsewhere as ornamentals for their showy funnel-shaped flowers. Also (in form Ruellia): the genus itself.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species plantarum (1753) II. 634.
