Etymology: < Middle French rudeté (1316; French †rudeté , rare after the early 16th cent.) and its etymon post-classical Latin ruditas coarseness, ignorance, roughness or inelegance of style (from 12th cent. in British sources), rough or unworked material, roughness, harshness (from 13th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin rudis rude adj. + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix). Compare Old Occitan ruditat (14th cent.). Compare rudeship n. and earlier rudeness n.
= rudeness n. (in various senses).
