Compare to rouk and round at rouk v.; the one phrase is presumably an alteration of the other, but the direction of the change is unclear, as is whether the change involves substitution of a distinct word. Perhaps compare Dutch regional ronken to mutter or mumble (something), to say (something) secretly, specific use of Middle Dutch ronken, runken, Dutch ronken to snore.
