Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Runkel.

Etymology: < German Runkel, probably short for Runkelrübe (1761 or earlier) < a first element of uncertain origin (perhaps a metaphorical use of a form related to Runks and Runke large piece of bread, also of uncertain origin) + Rübe (see rape n.⁵).

Now rare.

Any of several varieties of the beet, Beta vulgaris, esp. one used for sugar production.
