Etymology: < Bengali ruṭi, cognate with Hindi roṭī roti n.2 Compare earlier roti n.2Compare the following earlier reference (in an English context) to the Bengali word in the phrase mākhan ruṭi bread and butter, buttered bread:1790 Calcutta Chron. 28 Jan. The poor muckin-rooty Ghost [i.e. a ghost asking for bread and butter], at Midnapore.
