Etymology: < the names of Michele Stefano Conte de Rossi (1834–98), Italian geologist, and François-Alphonse Forel (1841–1912), Swiss physician and limnologist + scale n.3Rossi and Forel collaborated in proposing the scale in 1883, both having independently published similar intensity scales in the previous decade.
